ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ യുണൈറ്റഡ് കിങ്ഡത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിയായിരുന്നു ഡേവിഡ് ലോയ്ഡ് ജോർജ്ജ് (17 ജനുവരി 1863 - 26 മാർച്ച് 1945). 1916 മുതൽ 1922 വരെയാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം ഭരണത്തിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. വെയ്ല്സ് വംശജനായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം അവിടെയാണ് രാഷ്ട്രീയക്കാരനായി വളർന്നുവന്നത്. ലിബറൽ പാർട്ടിക്കാരനായ അവസാനത്തെ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിയായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. കൺസർവേറ്റീവുകളിൽ നിന്നുപോലും പിന്തുണ കാര്യമായി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചെങ്കിലും അവർ പിന്തുണ പിൻവലിച്ചതോടേ സ്ഥാനമൊഴിയേണ്ടതായി വരുകയായിരുന്നു.
ജീവിതരേഖ
1863 ജനുവരി 17-ന് വെൽഷ് വംശജരായ ദമ്പതികളുടെ മകനായി മാഞ്ചസ്റ്ററിൽ ഡേവിഡ് ലോയ്ഡ് ജോർജ്ജ് ജനിച്ചു. വെയിൽസിലെ വിവിധ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലായി വളർന്നുവന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മാതൃഭാഷ വെൽഷ് ആയിരുന്നു. വെൽഷ് പ്രദേശത്ത് നിന്നും പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിപദത്തിലെത്തിയ ഏക വ്യക്തിയാണ് ഡേവിഡ്. രണ്ടാം ഭാഷയായി മാത്രം ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ഏക പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിയും അദ്ദേഹം തന്നെ.
അധ്യാപകനായിരുന്ന പിതാവ് ഡേവിഡിന്റെ ഒന്നാം വയസ്സിൽ തന്നെ മരണപ്പെട്ടതോടെ മാതാവിന്റെയും അമ്മാവന്റെയും സംരക്ഷണത്തിലാണ് വളർന്നു വന്നത്. അമ്മാവന്റെ സ്വാധീനം വിശ്വാസത്തിലും രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിലുമെല്ലാം ഡേവിഡിനെ നിലപാടുകൾക്ക് രൂപം നൽകി. സ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസശേഷം ഡേവിഡിനെ അഭിഭാഷകരംഗത്തേക്ക് തിരിച്ചുവിട്ടതും അമ്മാവൻ തന്നെയായിരുന്നു.
പ്രാദേശിക രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിൽ പയറ്റിത്തുടങ്ങിയ ഡേവിഡ് മികച്ച പ്രഭാഷകനായും വെൽഷ് ലിബറൽ നേതാവായും തിളങ്ങി. 1890-ൽ നടന്ന ഉപതെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ പാർലമെന്റ് അംഗമായി കഷ്ടിച്ച് വിജയിച്ച് 55 വർഷത്തോളം തൽസ്ഥാനം നിലനിർത്തിവന്നു. 1905 മുതൽ മന്ത്രിസഭയിൽ അംഗമായ അദ്ദേഹം 1908-ൽ ധനകാര്യത്തിന്റെ ചാൻസലർ ആയി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. ജനക്ഷേമപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്ക് പണം കണ്ടെത്താനായി ഭൂവുടമസ്ഥതക്കും ഉയർന്ന വരുമാനത്തിനും നികുതി ഏർപ്പെടുത്താൻ നിർദ്ദേശിക്കുന്ന ബജറ്റ് (1909) അവതരിപ്പിച്ചെങ്കിലും കൺസർവേറ്റീവുകൾക്ക് മുൻതൂക്കമുള്ള ഹൗസ് ഓഫ് ലോർഡ്സ് അംഗീകരിച്ചില്ല. ഇതെത്തുടർന്നുണ്ടായ ഭരണഘടനാപ്രതിസന്ധി 1910-ലെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുകൾക്കും 1911-ലെ പാർലമെന്റ് നിയമത്തിനും ശേഷമാണ് അവസാനിച്ചത്. ബജറ്റ് നിർദ്ദേശങ്ങൾ 1910-ൽ നിയമമാക്കപ്പെട്ടു. 1911-ലെ ദേശീയ ഇൻഷൂറൻസ് നിയമവും തത്തുല്ല്യ നടപടികളും ഒരു ക്ഷേമരാഷ്ട്രനിർമ്മിതിക്ക് കളമൊരുക്കി. 1913-ൽ മാർക്കോണി അഴിമതി ആരോപണത്തിൽ കുരുങ്ങിയെങ്കിലും 1914-ൽ ഒന്നാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് വരെ തൽസ്ഥാനത്ത് തുടർന്നു.
പലസ്തീനിലെ ജൂത കുടിയേറ്റത്തിന് അനുവാദം നൽകാൻ തുർക്കി വിസമ്മതിച്ചതിനാൽ യഹൂദർക്ക് ഒരു ബദൽ മാതൃരാജ്യമായി നിർദ്ദേശിച്ച ഉഗാണ്ടൻ പദ്ധതിയെ കുറിച്ച് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സർക്കാരുമായി നടത്തിയ ചർച്ചകളിൽ അദ്ദേഹം തിയോഡോർ ഹെർസലിന്റെ നിയമ ഉപദേശകനായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു.
1916-ൽ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിയായി ചുമതലയേറ്റ ഡേവിഡ് ലോയ്ഡ്, 1922-ൽ പടിയിറങ്ങി. തുടർന്നും ലിബറൽ വിഭാഗങ്ങളിലൊന്നിന്റെ നേതാവായി തുടർന്നു.
1945 മാർച്ച് 26 -ന് ലോയ്ഡ് ജോർജ്ജ് തന്റെ 82 -ആം വയസ്സിൽ കാൻസർ ബാധിച്ച് മരണപ്പെട്ടു. ദ്വൈഫർ നദിക്കരയിലെ കല്ലറയിലാണ് അടക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. ഇന്ന് അതിന് സമീപം ലോയ്ഡ് ജോർജ്ജ് മ്യൂസിയം നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു.
